New Systems Biology Awards enable detailed study of microbes (EurekAlert!)

Toward An Effective Treatment For A Major Hereditary Disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy - ACS Chemical Biology (Medical News Today)
Scientists are reporting a key advance toward developing the first effective drug treatment for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic disease that involves motor neuron loss and occurs in 1 out of every 6,000 births. George Palade; father of modern cell biology won Nobel for medicine in '74 (San Diego Union-Tribune)
The field of cell biology basically did not exist when George Palade began his research using electron microscopy to study cell structure, chemistry and function. The man who came to be known as the father of modern cell biology was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1974 and was recruited to the University of California San Diego in 1990.
