Economic Report: Retail sales tumble 1.2%, capping worst quarter in decade (Market Watch)
U.S. retail sales fell 1.2% in September, the worst drop in three years and the third decline in a row, a further sign that the economy has sunk into a recession led by an exhausted consumer.

Oct. 12, 2002: ShopKo Stores Inc. raised its third-quarter earnings forecast this week, saying it expects to lose a little less than had been anticipated. The discount chain now expects to lose 3 to 7 cents per share. ShopKos overall sales dropped by 3.2 percent in September, with its Pamida division of small-town general merchandise stores leading the decline.

Retailers Report Weak September Sales (Display & Design Ideas)
According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), retail sales continued to lag in advance of the holiday season with industry sales for September (which exclude automobiles, gas stations and restaurants) decreasing 0.7 percent seasonally adjusted from last month, and increasing 1.4 percent unadjusted year-over-year.
